Early Intervention for Back Pain

When it comes to the management and treatment of chronic pain, such as back pain, patients are faced with a variety of options to find relief. The good news is that most insurance companies recognize the importance of early intervention for this type of pain and more patients can now access quality treatment.

While this has not always been the case, insurers are now encouraging more “high-value” treatment options for low back pain. Let’s take a look at what high-value and low-value treatments are, and how to know what is best for you.

High-value care also knows as “well care” differs from “sick care” in many ways.

Playing a role in your recovery

Our current healthcare system has shown that the urgency to find pain relief often leads to patients dependance on “sick care” which includes options such as surgery, medication, or injections. In this approach, the patient is a passive participant in their journey to recovery. For some, these solutions truly provide results in reducing pain and improving quality of life. For others, these methods cause further frustration, dependance, and ongoing pain.

On the other hand, “well care” treatment enables patients to be active in their recovery and work toward a solution alongside their healthcare practitioner. There are times when patients may combine aspects of each of these care options to get the best outcome.

Timing is everything

Physical therapy is recognized as a “well care” method. PT encompasses many treatment options and is often suggested in conjunction with exercise, stretching, yoga, progressive relaxation, heat or ice, cognitive behavioral therapy, and motor control exercise. Early intervention is an important part of well care, as it allows patients to receive treatment for pain before it becomes an injury. Patients can find relief, get hands-on treatment, and learn exercises to prevent future pain.

We are hopeful that the greater healthcare system will begin to recognize the benefits of early intervention in the larger picture of patient health and successful outcomes.
